Weaving Stories Through Textiles

BOKJA: Weaving Stories Through Textiles

Founded in 2000 by Huda Baroudi and Maria Hibri, BOKJA is a Beirut-based design collective that combines craftsmanship, storytelling, and sustainability. The name “BOKJA,” inspired by the Arabic word for a fabric bundle used to wrap a bride’s dowry, reflects the brand’s strong ties to heritage and tradition.

Known for its bold assemblage aesthetic, BOKJA transforms textile fragments from various times and places into cohesive, vibrant designs. Each piece is carefully layered, celebrating the unique character of every element while creating a unified visual story. This approach captures the essence of Beirut—a city that seamlessly blends tradition with modernity, and East with West.

In addition, BOKJA’s work highlights the importance of cultural diversity and sustainability in design. By reimagining traditional crafts with a modern voice, they inspire conversations around preserving heritage in a rapidly changing world. With every creation, they honor the past, embrace the present, and imagine a future where art and culture continue to connect people globally.

Where Heritage Meets Innovation

The collective unites artisans from over 10 countries, each contributing rich and diverse textile traditions. These skilled individuals blend local crafts with contemporary designs, ensuring heritage is preserved while fostering modern creativity. By reupholstering vintage furniture with reclaimed fabrics, BOKJA emphasizes sustainability. They transform discarded materials into thoughtful, impactful designs, giving new life to objects that would otherwise be forgotten.

In addition to crafting beautiful pieces, BOKJA stands as a hub for craftivism. It addresses pressing social issues like ecological responsibility and social justice. Their mission extends beyond design—it’s about building connections between people and cultures. They use textiles as a dynamic medium for storytelling, sparking conversations that inspire change.

Through their work, BOKJA not only showcases diversity but also creates a sense of unity. By connecting artisans, communities, and customers, they foster a deeper appreciation for craftsmanship and its ability to address global challenges with creativity and purpose.
